The administration of the Kirkuk Veterinary Hospital has raised the alarm level following the outbreak of bird flu (H5N1) in Al-Sulaymaniyah, Shafaq News reported on May 26.
“After the diagnosis of avian influenza in the Kurdistan Region, especially in the province of Sulaymaniyah, and after the visit of a committee headed by Dr. Tamer Al-Khafaji, Director General of the General Veterinary Department, the results confirmed the presence of avian influenza (H5N1),” said Sabah Nuri Hasan, hospital administrator.
Hasan added that the hospital administration has ordered the formation of emergency veterinary teams in all departments and veterinary clinics associated with this hospital. “carry out intensive surveillance and monitoring of any cases of the disease in poultry farms, backyard chickens and poultry markets, and avoid contact with infected cases if detected.”
He noted that the teams carried out field checks in Zardak, Khaslow and Yarwali areas, which were found free of epidemic diseases. Hospital teams also inspected chicken coops and fish ponds and took necessary measures.
