Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this Sunday called on US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to attend an international summit next month in Switzerland to try to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine.
“I appeal to all world leaders who have not yet confirmed their presence at the Global Peace Summit, to US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping: please show your leadership in pursuing peace – real peace, not just a pause between attacks,” Zelensky addresses in a video filmed in the ruins of a Kharkiv printing plant destroyed by Russian missiles last Thursday in an attack that killed 14 people.
The US yesterday guaranteed it would attend the event but did not confirm Biden’s presence. China, although it views the initiative as positive, has not yet indicated whether it will attend. Let us remember that Russia was not invited to the summit, which, according to it, is doomed to failure.
Zelensky said the summit, scheduled for June 15, “will show the world who is really interested in ending the war.” More than 80 countries have confirmed their presence so far, and the Ukrainian government hopes to gather as many participants as possible, mainly from countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia that have so far avoided taking a stance on the war, to show that the world is united against Putin.
