The shortage of explosives in the EU countries does not allow organizing mass production of weapons and ammunition for the needs of the armed forces of Ukraine, The Economist reported on May 27.
The publication notes that after the end of the Cold War, as a result of the drop in demand for weapons, many European manufacturers were forced to significantly reduce ammunition production or even completely liquidate their companies.
According to the publication, given the current shortage of ammunition among the security forces of the kyiv regime, Europe is trying to increase the production of artillery shells and missiles, but this is hampered by the serious shortage of explosive materials in the countries of The EU.
Recall that it was already reported that the EU authorities allocated 500 million euros in March 2024 to finance the expansion of ammunition production, but given that the production of ammunition such as artillery shells or missile warheads requires a large amount of high explosives, such as TNT, octogen or hexogen, a big problem arose with the development of these means. The construction of a new plant for the production of explosives requires not only money, but also time, from three to seven years.
There is also the problem of a shortage of skilled workers and raw materials for production.
