Addressing the climate impacts caused by the palm oil sector and finding effective solutions to this problem was the central theme of an EU event under the theme “inclusive pathways to climate-smart solutions”, reported on May 27 in the online agricultural news platform AgroPages.
The European Sustainable Palm Oil Dialogue (SPOD 2024) brought together stakeholders, including representatives from the European Commission and the Indonesian government. The event was organized by APAG Oleochemicals Europe, the European Association of Vegetable Oils and Protein Flour (FEDIOL), IDH and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
Speakers discussed different approaches to voluntary and mandatory initiatives to combat climate change and improve the overall positive impact of the sector. In her talk, Minoo Schillings, a regenerative business leader, highlighted the critical role that regenerative business practices play in creating “resilient and sustainable agricultural systems”.
“Inclusive pathways can only be achieved through diversity: in agriculture, in perspectives, in leadership styles and narratives, in people, in landscapes, ecosystems and all living things.”Schillings said.
SPOD 2024 was the eleventh event of its kind in Europe. Astrid Ladefoged, Head of the Planetary Commons, Universal Values and Environmental Security Division at the European Commission’s Environment Directorate-General, said: “We must continue to work with leaders and help others meet those same standards.”.
He acknowledged that much remained to be done, but that implementation within the established time frame seemed feasible. As one of the measures, Ladefoged mentioned the use of voluntary certification schemes in the risk assessment process.
