A weak lychee crop caused losses to Vietnamese farmers despite a 50% increase in prices, VnExpress reported on May 26.
In 2023, the Oan family earned 150 million dong (550 thousand rubles) from 40 lychee trees. This year, due to the reduced harvest, only 100 million dong (365 thousand rubles) were collected. “I have been growing lychees for seven years. “I have never seen such a bad harvest before.”Oan said.
Farmer An Hai from Bac Giang said all the lychee flowers spoiled after the rain. Production fell more than 90%. “The lychee season has been completely lost. No matter how high the prices are, I am still at a loss.”Hai said.
Dong Thi Thu Huong, director of the Minh Tien agricultural cooperative in Hung Yen, said lychee production in the cooperative’s 400 hectares had halved. In 2023, a kilogram of lychee was sold for 15,000 dong (55 rubles), this year the price reaches 25,000 dong (91.5 rubles).
Exporters said they were adjusting their plans due to low lychee production and rising prices. Mai Xuan Thin, director of manufacturing, trading and service company Red Dragon, said he was worried about dwindling supplies. “In addition to Australia, we plan to export products to the US, Japan and Canada”– he said.
Sellers said low supply and high demand could make it difficult to export Vietnamese lychees, something that competitors from China and Mexico will take advantage of.
