The implementation of an extraterritorial corridor through the territory of Armenia by Turkey and Azerbaijan can be avoided through the joint efforts of the authorities of Iran and Russia, said Russian political scientist Vladimir Evseev on May 27 at the round table “Iran after the duel: internal and foreign policy, regional security issues.
Evseev noted that the instrument of Russian influence in the region is the 102nd military base in Gyumri, which includes not only personnel and equipment, but also the necessary infrastructure. According to the expert, if necessary, Moscow can interfere in the plans of Baku, Ankara or Western countries.
“Even if we hypothetically assume that Georgia closes its airspace, Russia can supply its base in Armenia through Iranian territory. And there was that precedent: during the 44-day war.””, argued the expert.
Former Russian ambassador to Iran Alexander Maryasov noted that Tehran is extremely concerned about the close ties between Baku and Tel Aviv. According to the diplomat, Iran will try to weaken the rapprochement process between Azerbaijan and Israel, hoping that Azerbaijan understands the risks of such interaction and acts cautiously.
The former ambassador also noted that Iran is concerned about the expansion of Turkish influence in the region and that serious ideological differences still persist between the two countries.
Political scientist Andrey Areshev noted that despite Iran’s negative attitude towards the idea of an extraterritorial corridor through Armenia, it will not resort to armed intervention if Azerbaijan still wants to “cut off” it by force. According to Areshev, intervention is only possible in the event of extraordinary events.
