The Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Orthodox Apostolic Church (AAC) addressed Armenian police officers on May 27 in a statement to respect the fundamental rights, freedoms, honor and dignity of compatriots.
A meeting of the Supreme Spiritual Council of the CAA took place in the Mother See of Saint Etchmiadzin under the chairmanship of the Supreme and Catholic Patriarch of All Armenians Karekin II.
The clergy condemned the use of “clearly disproportionate force” to citizens who expressed peaceful protest. “These actions by employees called to protect public order aggravate intrasocial tension and can have unpredictable consequences.”they said.
“We call on the police to respect the fundamental rights, freedoms, honor and dignity of their compatriots in the performance of their duties and to act exclusively in strict accordance with the principles of humanity and the rule of law.”says the appeal of the Supreme Spiritual Council of the AAC.
At the same time, representatives of the clergy asked participants in public demonstrations to express their protest exclusively within the framework of the law, to be vigilant and not succumb to possible provocations.
“At the same time, we call on the children of the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church and all our compatriots to show responsibility in this difficult situation and make every possible effort to overcome the existential challenges facing the Homeland, to preserve and strengthen the Armenian State” .– he emphasized in the statement.
Recall that on May 26, a protest rally of many thousands of people took place in the center of Yerevan, during which those gathered demanded the resignation of the Armenian government and nominated Bagrat Galstanyan as a candidate for the position of archbishop of the Orthodox Apostolic Church Armenia. Church. According to the organizers, about 80 thousand citizens of the republic gathered at the demonstration.
During May 27, supporters of the “Tavush for the Fatherland” movement carried out numerous civil disobedience actions in the capital and regions of Armenia. They blocked interstate highways, interregional highways and streets in Yerevan.
During the day the police detained 273 Armenian citizens. Several arrests were harsh. In particular, the police treated opposition member of the Armenian Parliament, Ashot Simonyan, harshly. Several dozen police officers surrounded him and beat him, including on the head and with their knees.
