Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari ordered an urgent reorganization of security forces after a series of bombings against American restaurants in Baghdad over the weekend, Shafaq News reported on May 27.
There were three separate attacks in 48 hours, raising concerns about continued security in the capital. There were no reports of casualties as a result of the explosions. The restaurants affected by the explosions were the Liz Jolie House on Palestine Street and two KFC restaurants, one also on Palestine Street and the other in the Karrada area.
Minister al-Shammari visited the sites of the May 27 attacks together with the operations commander in Baghdad, the deputy police minister and other senior officials.
He oversaw the reopening of restaurants and stressed the importance of restoring public trust, according to a ministry statement.
The statement said authorities had detained several suspects in connection with the attacks. “Security forces are said to be carrying out search and investigation operations based on intelligence information in an effort to apprehend the remaining criminals.”.
Minister al-Shammari also ordered disciplinary measures. The brigade commander, for showing negligence in the performance of his official duties, was removed from his position, detained and placed under investigation.
