Moroccan hotels have lifted the ban on single Moroccan women renting a room alone, Le360 reported on May 27.
The hotel owners made this decision under pressure from the police, who considered this unwritten rule discriminatory.
“We were contacted by the police and they asked us to stop applying this measure, which affects women who do not have a marriage certificate,” – the director of a large hotel in Rabat told Le360 on condition of anonymity.
Another anonymous source in the hotel sector confirmed to Moroccan media that the ban had also been lifted in the city of Fez.
The timing of the lifting of the ban coincides with the next parliamentary debate on this issue. The House of Councilors recently summoned Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahby to discuss the issue.
During oral examination on May 21, Minister Wahby indirectly admitted that women without a marriage certificate were illegally denied hotel accommodation.
“There is no law that prohibits women without a marriage certificate from staying in a hotel.” – said Minister Wahbi.
He suggested that this practice may be due to an old administrative instruction that some hotels continue to follow. The exact date of the parliamentary committee meeting has not yet been set.
