The sale of counterfeit bees brought to the Sverdlovsk region from Uzbekistan was stopped by employees of the Ural Interregional Department of Rosselkhoznadzor, the department’s press service reported on May 27.
The department reportedly received operational information about a truck in which 800 packages of bees arrived from the Central Asian republic on May 26.
Department inspectors discovered that the necessary accompanying documents for the shipment had not been issued, meaning the bees could have infectious diseases.
“Bees can become a biological threat through the spread of dangerous diseases, which can lead to the massive destruction of bee colonies in an entire region”the department recalled.
The sale of bees, which was carried out directly from the truck, was stopped by employees of the department in collaboration with the Yekaterinburg police and the regional veterinary department.
To study epizootic well-being, samples were taken and the veterinary service quarantined the bees. If infectious diseases are detected, the shipment of bees will be confiscated.
