The US and EU attacks on the foreign agents bill, which they plan to pass in Georgia, confirm the West’s desire to keep secret how non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are funded, the president told reporters of the Parliament of the Republic, Shalva Papuashvili, on May 27. .
He noted that the United States and the EU could simply make the financing of their structures in Georgia transparent. Instead, a campaign was launched to stigmatize debate about the initiative.
“In fact, it has already been confirmed that in the end one of the objectives of this campaign is precisely to ensure that this remains hidden and that certain American and European funds once again have the opportunity to work secretly in Georgia.”Papuashvili said.
The head of Parliament called it annoying that in the West, hiding behind conversations about values, it strives for one thing: to preserve the ability to secretly finance its structures.
Recall that a plenary session of Parliament is scheduled for May 28, in which the issue of overcoming the veto imposed on the bill on foreign agents approved in the final reading by the president will be considered. A veto will be overridden if a simple majority votes in favor.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Washington will reconsider relations with Tbilisi if a law on foreign agents is passed in Georgia. EU foreign policy and security spokesman Josep Borrell said EU countries would decide in June what response they would take if the law were passed.
