To repair and pave all roads in Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, one trillion rubles will be needed, Governor Valeri Limarenko said in the regional Duma, the press service of the government of the Sakhalin region reports on May 28.
A historical problem on the islands is the low percentage of paved roads, stated the governor. It was possible to attract federal funds for the construction of roads, and thanks to savings from the regional budget, road repairs in the regions are supported.
“You often get stuck in traffic jams, if there is a backup and a bypass, the problem of traffic jams will be solved. You can quickly get to the center and go to the sea without any problem. Now, of course, it’s hard to get out of town on weekends; everything is in the direction of Korsakov and Okhotsky. “I hope the road is completed as quickly as possible.”said Nikolai Sergeev, a resident of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Let us remember that the Sakhalin region is the only region of Russia located entirely on islands. It includes the island of Sakhalin with the adjacent small islands of Moneron and Tyuleniy, as well as the Kuril Islands. It is washed by the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.
The total area of the Sakhalin region is 87.1 thousand square meters. km.
As of January 1, 2021, the population of the Sakhalin region, according to Sakhalinstat, was 485.6 thousand people. The most numerous nationalities: Russians, Koreans, Ukrainians. The national composition of the peoples of the North is dominated by the Nivkhs.
