In European countries, the supply of Atlantic cod is decreasing due to a decrease in global catches and trade restrictions with Russia, according to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), published on May 28 on the All-Russian Fisheries Association (VARPE) portal.
A new FAO report on global fish market trends in 2024 states that “The ban on trade with the Russian Federation following the conflict in Ukraine affects European processors. “They just don’t get enough raw materials.”
The Russian Association of Fishing Companies (VARPE) reported a shortage of cod in the countries of the European Union. As confirmation of this information, a new FAO report was cited, which states that the ban on trade with Russia after the start of a special operation in Ukraine has a negative impact on European processing companies. “They just don’t get enough raw materials” – notes the report.
Manufacturers are experiencing severe shortages of raw materials and there is fierce competition among them for resources, leading to higher prices.
German Zverev, president of the All-Russian Association of Fishing Companies, believes that the sanctions imposed against Russia have had unintended consequences. He calls these restrictions “a trigger for a dramatic change in world fishing.”
It was previously reported that Russia has significantly increased fish supplies to European countries in 2022. The volume of exports increased by 18.7% and amounted to 198.8 thousand tons.
