First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Sadovnikov ordered to increase forces to extinguish natural fires at a meeting of the commission for the prevention and liquidation of emergency situations, the press service of the head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the government from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) reports on May 28.
At the beginning of the day, in Yakutia there are 5 forest fires on a total area of 105 hectares and 3 landscape fires on an area of 230 hectares. There is no threat to populated areas and economic facilities, the municipalities reported at the meeting.
119 soldiers and 2 teams participate in extinguishing the fires. Nine aircraft carry out air patrol (An2, Cessna, Tundra), 4 Mi-8 helicopters carry out firefighting missions to transfer forces and equipment.
Most of the fires were caused by human causes. However, on the Suntarsky and Olekminsky uluses, the fire broke out due to dry storms.
The fire season has been established in Yakutia since May 6. During this period, 22 forest fires were recorded in the territory of the republic in a total area of 451 hectares and 19 landscape fires in an area of 674 hectares.
During the current fire season in Yakutia, 50 aircraft and drones will work to monitor and eliminate fires. Two sounding planes will also be deployed to artificially induce precipitation. Forest fire brigades will be formed with a total of more than 1.2 thousand people
Recall that 2021 has become the most catastrophic year in terms of fires for Russian forests since 2001. In Yakutia alone, the total area of forest fires amounted to about 8.5 million hectares or 85 thousand square kilometers. This is the largest loss due to forest fires in Russia in recent decades. According to Green Peace estimates, the fires destroyed record amounts of forests in Yakutia. In addition, forest fires significantly increase permafrost degradation.
