The mayor of Lisbon on Tuesday considered that the visit of the Ukrainian head of state to Portugal is important to demonstrate solidarity, and called on the parties to clarify their position on the conflict with Russia.
“We must state very clearly which side we are on, the side of Ukraine, the side of the country that was invaded by Russia,” said Carlos Moedas, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the second closest clinic of the Lisbon + Health municipal project.
Recalling that Lisbon was one of the first capitals to “react immediately in support of Ukraine” when Russia militarily invaded the country on February 24, 2022, the mayor considered that at the moment, with the campaign for the European elections on June 9, “very It is important that parties make their position clear so that voters can immediately weigh their vote on this disaster of a country that is invading a European country.”
“I think this is of great importance for the country. It is important that President Vladimir Zelensky feels that the Portuguese are with him, that Europe is with him, because this is a war in Europe in which we live, and we must fight with all our might against this unacceptable invasion, against this horror in Europe, from Russia, which is invading territory, which is invading a sovereign country,” he emphasized.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Portugal this afternoon, where he will be received by the head of state and prime minister and sign a ten-year agreement on bilateral cooperation.
According to a note issued on Monday by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic and the Prime Minister’s Office, this is a “working visit” with the aim of “deepening the excellent relations between the two states, with a particular focus on strengthening cooperation in the field of security and defense.”
Vladimir Zelensky, who will arrive in Portugal after a visit to Spain and Belgium, will first hold a meeting at the official residence of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, where a bilateral agreement will be signed, and then will be received by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Belem Palace.
