The State of Palestine was recognized by the Republic of Ireland, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris announced in parliament, RTÉ reports on May 28.
“Today is a historic day, but it comes in the darkest of circumstances, as we witness a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the Gaza Strip and Rafah.”“Harris commented on the act of formal recognition of Palestine.
The Palestinian representative to Ireland, Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, present in parliament at the time, was greeted with applause by the Prime Minister and MPs and gave a gesture of thanks as she watched the proceedings from the guest balcony. There were also several families of immigrants from Palestine.
Let us remember that the decision to recognize Palestine was previously made by the Irish government. Simon Harris attributed this decision to the emergency situation in Gaza.
Note that authorities in Norway and Spain made a similar decision.
