The head of the Libyan parliament met with the Turkish ambassador

The head of the Libyan parliament met with the Turkish ambassador

The latest events and the situation in Libya were discussed by the president of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the Turkish ambassador, Kenan Yilmaz, the press service of the Libyan parliament reported on May 28.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Turkish ambassador conveyed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives the most sincere condolences of the President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey for the death of his son.

During the meeting, the parties discussed ways to resolve the political crisis in Libya, as well as bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Kenan Yilmaz highlighted the depth of relations between the two countries and stated that Turkish companies operate comfortably throughout Libya.

At the end of the meeting, the president of the House of Representatives, Águila Saleh, wished Kenan Yilmaz success at the end of his mandate as Turkish ambassador to Libya.

Recall that on May 25, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decision on the appointment of a new ambassador to Libya. Güven Begeç became the new ambassador.

We also recall that Turkey signed two memoranda with the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya in November 2019 on military cooperation and maritime border demarcation. Thanks to Turkish military assistance, GNA forces were able to expel Khalifa Haftar’s army from the Libyan capital.

The first Turkish units arrived in Libya on January 2, 2020. Then their mission was extended on June 21, 2021 for 18 months.

On October 3, 2022, several new memoranda were signed between Libya and Türkiye in Tripoli. The main one was the memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the field of energy and gas. The memorandum grants Turkey privileges in the field of exploration of oil and gas deposits on the Libyan shelf.

There is currently a Turkish military contingent in Libya, as well as representatives of the Turkish PMC.
