The White House is disappointed that the Georgian Parliament overrode the Georgian president’s veto of the foreign agents law, U.S. presidential administration press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a May 28 briefing.
“This is not what democracies do, so we are disappointed to see what happened.”– she said.
Jean-Pierre pointed out that the new law makes registration mandatory for “Civil society organizations”What are non-governmental organizations called in the United States? “only” due to the fact that they receive more than 20% of their financing from abroad. The White House sees this as an effort to repress civil society.
The representative of the US administration also drew attention to the fact that tens of thousands of Georgians protested against the law. He accused Georgian authorities of authoritarianism and repression of dissent.
Recall that Jean-Pierre previously stated that Washington would fundamentally reconsider relations with Tbilisi if a law on foreign agents were passed in Georgia. The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, stated that this law is necessary to strengthen state sovereignty.
It is also worth noting that in the United States the foreign agent law has been in effect for more than 80 years. Georgia relied on it when drafting its bill, but significantly relaxed control measures. Foreign agents are only required to register and submit an annual financial report.
