The representative of the Republic of Madeira will nominate Miguel Albuquerque for the presidency of the regional government this Wednesday after the PSD won early elections on Sunday and reached an agreement on parliamentary protection with the CDS-PP.
The PSD/Madeira leader will be nominated at 12:00 at the San Lourenzo Palace, the official residence of the representative of the Republic, in Funchal.
According to the representative of the Republic, Ireneu Barreto, “a solution presented by the party with the most votes, the PSD, which has an agreement on parliamentary protection with the SDS, and the principled non-hostility of Chegi, PAN and IL.” , will have all the conditions for his program to be approved by the Legislative Assembly.”
On Monday, the PS and JPP announced that they would present Ireneu Barreto with a “joint government solution,” albeit without an absolute majority, and would negotiate with other parties.
However, the consulting judge considered that this joint resolution “had no chance of success in the Legislative Assembly.”
“I take responsibility, I will do everything to make this Government work, I hope that others who have responsibilities at the level of the Parliamentary Assembly will […] know how to respect the interests of the region,” said Ireneu Barreto, speaking to reporters after receiving the elected parties on Sunday.
Regarding the fact that Miguel Albuquerque is accused in the process of investigating suspicions of corruption in the region, the judge-counselor emphasized that the presumption of innocence “is an absolute value”, so a situation has arisen in which the outgoing chairman of the regional government finds himself “not a problem” for you.
Ireneu Barreto also said that he expects Miguel Albuquerque to hand him a “written text signed” by Social Democrat and CDS-PP/Madeira leader José Manuel Rodrigues upon his nomination.
On Monday, “in principle”, Miguel Albuquerque will return to the Palacio de São Lourenço to present a proposal for the composition of a new executive director, with the representative of the Republic expecting that a new regional executive director could be sworn in next week.
Miguel Albuquerque’s PSD (President of the Madeira Executive since 2015) again won the regional legislatures and elected 19 deputies, the PS received 11, JPP nine, Chega four, CDS-PP two, and IL and PAN one deputy each .
