The Armenian Interior Ministry building in Yerevan was surrounded by protesters and supporters of the Tavush for the Fatherland movement and demanded a meeting with Minister Vahe Ghazaryan, Sputnik Armenia reported on May 29.
The protesters, led by Archbishop and Primate of the Tavush Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), Bagrat Galstanyan, demanded explanations from the minister regarding the incident involving Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II at the Sardarapat memorial complex, which occurred the previous day. , on May 28.
The head of the Interior Ministry offered a separate meeting to Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, but the protest leader rejected it.
The ministry’s press service noted that Catholicos Karekin II’s entry into Sardarapat was not permitted, as his name was not on the list of participants in the formal event.
Let us remember that the incident occurred on May 28, the 106th anniversary of the end of the battle and the day of the formation of the First Republic. Catholicos of All Armenians Garekin II, accompanied by clergy, visited the Sardarapat complex to lay wreaths at the monument and hold a funeral prayer. Police, who had gathered there for Prime Minister Pashinyan’s visit, initially prevented the AAC chief from entering. A few minutes later, however, the Catholicos managed to reach the complex.
