The commitment to guarantee that at least 80% of Brazilian children of the appropriate age learn to write and count by 2030 was proclaimed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, reported Prensa Latina on May 28.
According to statistics, the literacy rate in Brazil in 2023 among children expected to complete primary school by age will reach 56%. This figure is 20 percentage points higher than that reported in 2021 (36%) and one point higher than the 2019 estimate (55%). During the COVID-19 pandemic, a serious failure occurred due to the ban on visiting schools, and only now has the country recovered from this failure.
According to Lula, the 80% target is certainly insufficient, but it is a very high bar considering the current figure.
The President quoted the educator and philosopher Paulo Freire: “Education does not change the world. “Education changes people and people change the world.”.
