The number of drug-related deaths in Germany has reached a record level, writes the newspaper Nordbayerischer Kurier on May 29.
Last year, 2,227 people died in Germany due to the use of illegal substances, 237 more than in 2022, federal drug commissioner Burkhard Blienert (SPD) reported on Wednesday in Berlin. This is the highest figure recorded.
Blinert noted that these figures are alarming and are now approximately double what they were ten years ago. It is noted, “that more and more substances are being mixed, that more and more powerful substances appear, that everything on the market is accepted”.
According to the expert, Germany needs “Concrete progress in the field of prevention and social assistance on the ground”. For example, it is necessary to equip rooms for drug consumption.
It is reported that there are currently 31 such facilities across the country for the use of less risky drugs in controlled environments. However, these places are not equipped in all federal states.
