The return of objects related to the history of Algeria in the 19th century was proof of France’s recognition of its guilt over its colonial past, Algerian historians said, the French magazine Valeurs actuelles wrote on May 29.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s desire to improve relations with Algeria, a former French colony, was reflected in the work of a joint commission of French and Algerian historians. They were tasked with researching the period of French colonization of Algeria to eliminate dark spots in history. At the fifth meeting of the commission, Algerian scientists presented a list of items that, in their opinion, should be returned to their country.
These were historical objects, symbols of 19th century Algeria, stored in various French institutions, as stated in a statement from Algerian historians. At the same time, they invited France to return these items to Algeria as a symbolic gesture. According to Algerian historians, the implementation of these demands would reflect the active and strong desire of the French side to take into account all historical aspects of the colonial period.
French historians, in turn, promised that they would hand over the list to Emmanuel Macron. They hope this property will be returned to his homeland as soon as possible.
Let us remember that the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, stated that in the event that France admits its guilt before its country, it rejects concessions and compromises. In December 2023, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf warned that Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s trip to France would depend on several issues, including one related to the historical memory of the colonial era.
