The Philippines is making illegal sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, the Global Times newspaper wrote on May 28.
Previously, Chinese authorities introduced a four-month fishing ban to preserve biological diversity in the South China Sea.
Manila reacted very harshly to this ban, accusing China of exceeding its powers and violating international law.
According to Lei Xiaolu, a professor at the Institute of Frontier and Ocean Studies at Wuhan University, the Philippines’ claims that China’s baselines in the South China Sea are “illegal, invalid”and Chinese procedures are not applicable to the relevant maritime areas, they are “unreasonable” as far as the Philippines’ illegitimate sovereignty claims in the South China Sea are concerned.
Analysts say the Philippines’ high-profile accusations are aimed at attracting outside powers to provide support and cooperation to confront China in disputed areas of the South China Sea.
