Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this Wednesday that “the spirit of the United Nations has died in the Gaza Strip” and called on the “Islamic world to respond” to Israeli attacks on displaced Palestinian camps in Rafah.
“The UN cannot even protect its own staff or humanitarian workers. What are you waiting for? The spirit of the United Nations has died in Gaza,” the Turkish head of state said, referring to an army attack on a refugee camp that caused 45 deaths on Sunday.
Speaking to the parliamentary group of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which he heads, Erdogan, leading a predominantly Muslim country of 85 million, addressed his peers in the “Islamic world” in addition to attacking the impotence of the international institution.
“I have a few words to say to the Islamic world: what are you waiting for to make a joint decision? God will hold the Israelis, you and us accountable,” he said, adding that “Israel is not just a threat to Gaza.” , but also to all humanity.”
“No state is safe until Israel respects international law and feels obligated to respect international law. Including Turkey,” he added.
“Israel and those who support it hope that this genocide will be forgotten: this genocide will not be forgotten. The killings of babies and children, the attacks on hospitals, churches and mosques will not be forgotten,” he warned.
Erdogan described the Israeli offensive in Rafah as a new act of “barbarity by a madman, a psychopath, a bloodthirsty vampire,” referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip has entered a bloodier phase with the attacks in Rafah,” the Turkish leader said.
“The images are unbearable, the heart cannot bear them. A desperate father, if he can, shows the world his child’s decapitated head,” he said, condemning the “attack on the tents” of a displaced persons camp near Rafah where “45 innocent Palestinians were martyred” on Sunday.
Erdogan insisted on blaming Washington and Europe for involvement in the deaths of Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.
“America, this blood is also on your hands. You bear as much responsibility for this genocide as Israel,” he said.
“As for European leaders, you also participated in this barbarity because you were silent,” added the Turkish head of state.
On Tuesday, outlining its version of events, days after Netanyahu admitted the attack was a “tragic accident”, the Israeli army attributed the incident at the displaced persons camp in Tal al-Sultan, west of Rafah, to an explosion of ammunition. stored in Hamas facilities located next to those it bombed.
“This was a devastating incident that we did not expect. Our army dropped 17 kilograms of explosives – the minimum amount that our combat aircraft can drop. Our ammunition alone could not have caused such a destructive fire,” he told the Israeli army. spokesman Daniel Hagary, who insisted the investigation was not yet complete.
The Israeli attack, which occurred on Sunday evening and allegedly targeted two senior Hamas officials, was condemned by much of the international community and classified by Israel as a “tragic accident” that occurred despite “all precautions taken to avoid harm and non-involvement” civilian population and the use of a minimum amount of explosives.”
