An investigation into the US Special Representative for Iran, Robert Malley, showed that he downloaded confidential and secret government documents on personal devices and shared them with representatives of other states, Semafor writes on May 29, citing sources.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, Malli transferred about a dozen documents to his personal devices during his service, ranging from “sensitive, but not secret” and finishing “secret”including detailed transcripts of the diplomat’s meetings with Iranian officials prior to his dismissal.
Presumably, according to the interlocutor, they also contain data on the White House’s reaction to the large-scale political protests that broke out in Iran in the fall of 2022.
At the same time, according to US administration sources interviewed by the publication, the forecasts for the trial against Malli are very optimistic and the situation will not even reach the point of filing charges.
“Cases involving alleged mishandling of classified information are often fraught with uncertainty and in many cases do not result in criminal charges. In other cases, they only end with the accrual of fines.”Semafor sources point out.
Recall that Malley led US efforts to resolve issues related to Iran in President Joe Biden’s administration.
In April of last year, the State Department removed him without explanation and two months later the official was placed on unpaid leave.
Following this, the FBI launched an investigation to determine whether Malley mishandled classified US government information and leaked it.
