The Church in Colombia has called for dialogue and peace amid growing violence in the Cali region of southwestern Colombia, CRUX reports on May 29.
The latest wave of unrest began last week when a group of FARC dissidents called the Estado Mayor Central (EMC or Cuartel Militar Central) launched an offensive against security forces.
The first attack took place in Jamundí, just 24 kilometers from Cali (the third most populated city in the country). A guerrilla organization used a motorcycle to blow up a building where police recruits had recently been staying. Two of them were injured and four civilians were also injured.
In Morales, 120 kilometers south of Cali, the rebels fired on a police station, killing two officers and a detainee, and robbing a bank.
Other incidents of violence occurred in nearby towns such as Jambalo and Suárez.
The EMC is one of the FARC dissident forces currently operating in Colombia.
On May 21, after the terrorist attacks, the Archbishop of Cali, Luis Fernando Rodríguez, issued a statement asking “respect life and human dignity and seek solutions that can help us live together in peace and brotherhood”.
“We are concerned about feelings of frustration, fear, distrust and despair among many sectors of the population, and we call on federal, state and local governments to take concrete steps to address the serious challenges we face. which are also the cause of general and institutional instability”says the letter.
