The Houthi rebels, who control much of Yemen, this Wednesday claimed responsibility for a missile attack that damaged a Greek-owned ship in the Red Sea, in a total of six operations in recent days, including in the Mediterranean.
In total, the rebels carried out six ballistic missile and drone attacks on ships sailing in the Red, Arabian and Mediterranean seas as part of their operation against Israel, which has intensified with the war in the Gaza Strip.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised statement that three of the hostilities took place in the Red Sea, with the first targeting the Laax, a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship. ., who “received a direct hit and was seriously injured.”
The ship was attacked by three missiles on Tuesday, according to US Central Command (Centcom).
The second operation targeted the Maltese-flagged vessel Morea and the third the Maltese-flagged Siladi, all of which were hit by ballistic missiles and drones, according to Saria.
The list of alleged “military operations” includes actions in the Arabian and Mediterranean seas.
“Yemen Armed Forces [Huthis] they also carried out two military operations against the ships Alba and Maersk Hartford in the Arabian Sea. The attacks were carried out using a range of missiles and drones,” Sarea added in his speech.
In the Mediterranean, the cargo ship Minerva Antonia was targeted and missiles were fired at it, according to the Houthis, who did not provide details.
Yemen’s rebels have already warned they will spread their operations to the Mediterranean to avenge their “brothers” in the Gaza Strip and punish those who continue to maintain economic ties with Israel, although there is no evidence they are capable of doing so. Successful attacks from such a long distance.
“All of the ships mentioned were attacked for violating the ban on access to the ports of occupied Palestine,” Sarea said.
Since November 19, the Houthis have launched attacks in the Red Sea, supporting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and causing economic damage to Israel, causing severe disruption to global maritime trade, and prompting military intervention by the United States and United Kingdom in Yemen.
The rebels recently announced an expansion of their operations in the Indian Ocean and also promised that they would attack any Israeli vessel, whether it was heading to an Israeli port or had any connection with the Jewish state.
The Houthis are a political-religious movement with a Shia majority that is militarily supported by Iran, which has been waging a civil war with government forces since 2014 (with the support of an international coalition led by Saudi Arabia).
