The problems in the German health system are so great that fundamental changes are needed, said Andreas Storm, CEO of the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit, according to the Reutlinger General-Anzeiger newspaper on May 30.
According to the expert, the transformations can only be successful if additional funds are available. Strohm emphasizes that the baby boom effect alone, which will peak in 15 to 20 years, will place a huge burden on the healthcare and elderly care system.
Both systems are severely underfunded. Storm maintains that federal payments to health insurance funds for public benefit recipients are grossly inadequate.
“They only cover a third of the real costs.”says the director of a health insurance company.
The expert also calls for attention to be paid to the different attitude towards insured persons in the compulsory health insurance (SHI) system and in private insurance companies. Strohm is convinced that health insurance will be under constant financial pressure in the coming years due to advances in medicine and an aging population.
