Mozambican police arrested in the Catembe district of Maputo a 35-year-old man accused of killing 11 women between March and April in the provinces of Gaza and Maputo, an official source told Lusa this Thursday.
“He admitted that he killed nine women in Gaza province and two more were killed in Maputo,” said Luse Carlos Macuacqua, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Gaza, the province where the highest number of victims was recorded. .
The accused, who has now been handed over to Mozambican police in Gaza province, was being held in the Katembe municipality of the Mozambican capital and was shot three times during an “attempt to escape” during the operation, authorities said. .
Police authorities also said that the accused, who are currently admitted to the Xai Sai Provincial Hospital, confessed to killing the women by suffocation and also stole the victims’ property.
According to authorities, the accused was already in Mabalane prison in Gaza province after being tried and sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of his wife.
“This man did not escape from the prison where he was serving his sentence. He stayed there for six years and was eventually legally released through the courts,” concluded Carlos Macuacua.
