The bill on the termination of international treaties of the Council of Europe regarding the Russian Federation was recommended for adoption by the State Duma Committee on International Affairs on February 8, the committee’s press service reports.
“The bill is a package to terminate for Russia the Statute of the Council of Europe, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and various protocols related to the withdrawal of the Russian Federation from the Council on March 16, 2022.”– said the chairman of the committee, Leonid Slutsky.
He added that the bill would consolidate the legal aspect of this decision, which became “the only possible one given the monstrous double standards, unilateral approaches and Russophobia that have prevailed in recent years” in Strasbourg.
The decision was reportedly unanimous.
Slutsky assured that the termination of the ECHR would not have a negative impact on the observance of human rights in Russia, since during 26 years of membership in the Council of Europe, all norms have been enshrined in Russian law and will continue to operate. In addition, the Russian constitution provides for more extensive guarantees in the field of human rights protection than the ECHR.
