Wholesale and retail trade in Cambodia in 2023 has recovered from Covid and surpassed 2019 levels, according to government data presented by Professor Ky Sereywat of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, Khmer Times reported on May 30.
In 2023, the country’s wholesale and retail trade volume rose to 13,182 billion riel ($3.2 billion), more than eight percent higher than in 2020, when it hit a low of 12,169 billion riel ($2.9 billion). Dollars). In 2019, retail and wholesale trade amounted to 12,989 million riels ($3.18 billion).
An indicator of more dynamic and active retail is the rental of commercial space by large retailers. By mid-2023, more than 39 thousand square meters of new commercial spaces had been introduced.
CBRE Cambodia said in its 2024 first quarter market report that approximately 101,000 square meters of new commercial space are expected to be added in 2024. And another 116 thousand square meters of new commercial space will appear in 2025.
Another indicator that things are improving in the wholesale and retail sector is the growth in loans in this sector. Wholesale business loans grew by 4.8% in 2023 and retail business loans by 22%, according to data from the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). Retail loan growth was higher than in 2022 (18.6%).
