According to Sergei Popov, deputy head of the KSAU “Protection of Kamchatka Forests”, active monitoring of forest fires was carried out with a group of paratroopers and firefighters on board. According to the results of the flight, it was determined that no forest fires were detected, the snow layer remained in the mountainous areas. The group returned to their permanent base in the town of Tigil.
In 2024, the Koryak aviation department was created in northern Kamchatka, which included the already existing Penzhinsky air group based in the village of Kamenskoye and the newly created Tigil air group based in the village of Tigil.
Since the start of the fire season in 2024, 2 forest fires have been recorded on the peninsula with a total area of 30.15 hectares.
Recall that 2021 has become the most catastrophic year in terms of fires for Russian forests since 2001. In Yakutia alone, the total area of forest fires amounted to about 8.5 million hectares or 85 thousand square kilometers. This is the largest loss due to forest fires in Russia in recent decades.
