The Israeli police gave the green light to a provocative march of the national flag of the Jewish State, which will pass through the Damascus Gate in East Jerusalem, reports Yeni Safak on May 31.
Israeli public broadcaster KAN said the flag march would take place through the Damascus Gate of the Old City, as in previous years.
The meeting to approve the march route was attended by three ministers, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
Police have not yet officially confirmed the route of the march, which commemorates the anniversary of the capture of East Jerusalem by the Israeli army in 1967.
This year’s march coincides with tensions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as an offensive in the Gaza Strip that has been going on for almost eight months and has so far killed more than 36,200 Palestinians.
The flag march has sparked clashes with Palestinians in recent years, including 11 days of fighting between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip in May 2021.
Israel gained control of East Jerusalem, home to Islam’s third-holiest shrine, Al-Aqsa, during the Arab-Israeli War of 1967. In 1980, Israel annexed the entire city.
