Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned this Wednesday after his cabinet recommended the dissolution of the lower house of parliament, according to a report. Reuters. The decision came a day after the politician once again won the general elections, but only missed out on a majority thanks to his Bharatiya Janata Party.
The alliance led by Narendra Modi’s Hindu Nationalist Party won a parliamentary majority in India’s general elections, according to data released by the Election Commission this Wednesday evening.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies won at least 272 of the 543 parliamentary seats, with some constituencies yet to be counted, according to results published on the Indian Election Commission website.
The BJP alone won 224 seats and won the most votes in 16 other constituencies (estimated at 240 in total), remaining by far the largest party in Parliament but below the 303 seats won in the 2019 elections.
The Prime Minister will take office for his third term next Saturday, June 8.
Narendra Modi has been in power since 2014, when he managed to win a majority.
