This Wednesday, the PSD accused the PS of acting against the middle class by defeating the Social Democrats’ proposal to reduce the IRS to the eighth income category, and Chegu of being a “crutch” for the Socialists in parliament.
In front of journalists, the president of the PSD parliamentary group, Hugo Soares, also considered as “dishonest” the statement by PS Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos that the Social Democrats’ proposal would not lead to a reduction in the IRS for people with the lowest incomes. brackets and even stated that the word of Chegi President André Ventura is “valued less and less.”
This criticism was voiced by Hugo Soares after PS, PCP, BE and Livre, with Chege abstaining, rejected in committee a proposal for a new rate table for the IRS PSD and CDS-PP categories.
On the other hand, the Committee on Budget and Finance approved the PS proposal to reduce IRS rates to level 6, but, unlike PSD and CDS, maintaining rates for the following levels.
The president of the SDP parliamentary group said the government “in the first 15 days of government proposed to parliament an IRS cut that continued to cut taxes for the lowest strata of the population but corrected injustices to the middle class.”
“This process ended today with the apparent departure of the middle class PS, but we already suspected that the PS has an accomplice against the middle class and blocking control: Chega. Chega, who so often shouts against socialism, is the crutch of the PS in parliament to approve the proposals of the PS contrary to the proposals of the government, the SDP and the SDS-PP,” said the leader of the Social Democratic bench.
On the issue of IRS cuts, Hugo Soares insisted that the PSD intended to cut taxes for people on lower incomes, “but also wanted to cut taxes for the middle class.”
“So what the PS general secretary is saying is not fair, saying that we don’t want to cut taxes at the lowest levels,” he countered.
At the political level, the president of the PSD parliamentary group said that this Wednesday “in Portugal there was not a defeat of the government, but a defeat of the middle class.” And then he made a series of direct accusations against the political activities of Chega President Andre Ventura.
“How do voters who voted for Chegu feel today, with the presumption of fighting socialism? How do the voters who voted for Chega in the name of the need to defeat the PS and today realize that Chega has entered into an alliance with the PS in an attack on the middle class feel?” he asked.
After this, Hugo Soares concluded: “Andre Ventura’s word, frankly, is worth less and less.”
To substantiate his opinion, the leader of the Social Democratic Party gave an example of negotiations in which the leader of Chegi participated regarding the reduction of the IRS.
“This time it was not about what was said in the corridors of parliament or in committees, but about what was discussed between parliamentary groups. Andre Ventura challenged, saying that if the PSD and CDS-PP matched the Chegi proposal in the second and second third income group would accompany the vote for the AD (Democratic Alliance). We made this attempt at negotiations, rapprochement, but Andre Ventura’s word had no value,” he emphasized.
The president of the PSD parliamentary group later gave an explanation for this behavior of President Chegi, saying that despite the fact that Andre Ventura “fills his mouth with talk about saucepans,” he is throwing a “hysteria.”
Andre Ventura “wanted to be in government, but since he was not, he decided to try to govern the PS from parliament,” he added.
