A quarter of young people in the Netherlands aged 16 to 24 have experienced traumatic events such as sexual violence, online fraud or traffic accidents, according to data from Victim Support Netherlands, the NL Times reported on June 5.
It should be noted that these types of injuries are typical for this age group. Around 450,000 young people in the Netherlands have experienced similar traumatic events.
“After experiencing trauma, young people are more likely than older people to experience feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and panic attacks.”– said the Victim Assistance Service.
However, around 70% never report a traumatic event to the police or a support agency. Young people often do not speak because “They think it won’t help” or because they feel “guilt or shame”. A large group stated that they did not want to be “considered a victim”.
