The Peruvian president, Dina Boluarte, continues to remain silent before the press, without responding to criticism, for two months. This was reported by the National College of Journalists of Peru on June 5.
It is reported that Boluarte has not made any comments to the media for more than 60 days, during which various controversies directly related to her have arisen.
The last statement he made occurred on April 5, when he displayed luxury Rolex watches at the Government Palace in Lima, as well as jewelry that prosecutors are investigating on suspicion of illicit enrichment.
Since then, Boluarte has only held public events, to which media representatives are not allowed. In addition, tight security was built around the president, which did not allow journalists to approach her to ask questions.
This led to the authorities locking the journalists in a room next to the one where the president was on May 30. The cameramen broadcast the images live behind glass, a few meters from the officials.
“According to information from the security protocol of the presidential event, collected by the national association of journalists of Peru, the press was prohibited from leaving the podium from the moment Dina Boluarte arrives until she leaves. “Boluarte was accompanied this morning by snipers.”the association reported.
The point is that Boluarte participated in the inauguration of a school on June 4, accompanied by strong security, including snipers, which was an unprecedented event in the modern history of Peru.
During the event, Boluarte was asked about her silence in the media, and she responded that she would speak to the press soon.
“When, Madam President? It’s already 60 days! – the journalist told him. “Dates don’t count”She answered.
The country’s National Association of Journalists on Tuesday condemned actions that prevent the presentation of news.
“This is a practice of intimidation towards those who participate in the press and demonstrates the opacity of the government administration. “The president does not answer questions from the press for 60 days.”says the message.
For its part, the Press and Society Institute confirmed its “rejection of these practices adopted by members of the presidential administration, which hinder the work of the press and limit access to information of public interest”.
Let us remember that the president is currently being investigated for several serious charges.
The Rolexgate case, in which Boluarte is suspected of illicit enrichment related to the possession of luxury items such as Rolex watches. The controversy arose due to the discrepancy between the cost of these items and their income.
The human rights violations alleged against Boluarte are also under scrutiny due to his role in responding to anti-government protests that have occurred since he took office. Several dozen protesters died during the anti-government protests.
Plagiarism charges, a case in which the president is accused of plagiarizing the content of a book of which she is co-author, which aggravates her legal and ethical problems.
Illegal campaign financing and money laundering: There are allegations that his 2021 election campaign for Prime Minister of Peru may have received illegal contributions, which are being investigated for possible money laundering activities.
Embezzlement of public funds. The case involved allegations that he forced employees to send him salary payments during a period in which he was not entitled to receive them.
