In Russia, a drone replaced divers in dangerous jobs

In Russia, a drone replaced divers in dangerous jobs

Tests of the unique unmanned catamaran “Kalan”, which is capable of replacing divers in dangerous underwater work, including during inspection of the technical condition of hydraulic structures, have been completed, the press service of the All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergency Situations reported on June 6 (VNII GOChS)

It should be noted that the tests were carried out by specialists from the institute.

“The unmanned hydrographic complex “Kalan” is a joint development of the research and production company “Fort XXI” and the All-Russian Research Institute of Civil Defense and Emergencies. The new product was tested in several reservoirs in the capital, including Moscow. Channel”says the message.

The office noted that the unmanned catamaran platform was developed for universal tasks. The device can carry out hydrographic surveys in conditions of complicated launching of a conventional vessel, in shallow water areas with a water level of up to 20 centimeters, during search work in water areas, examining steep walls of embankments and hydraulic structures, as well as work in cooling ponds and sludge storage facilities that are dangerous for people to encounter.

Standard batteries placed in the hull of the unmanned catamaran ensure its autonomous operation without recharging for at least 16 hours. The vessel can be controlled by an operator at a distance of up to five kilometers or by an autopilot system at a distance of up to 35 kilometers. All software used, including surveying and data processing, is developed by Fort XXI.

“The tests carried out confirmed all the declared characteristics of this unmanned hydrographic complex. We believe that its use in the units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations will be rational, since it will allow divers to be replaced when carrying out dangerous work.””said Vladimir Moshkov, deputy director of the All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergencies.

He added that in the future it is planned to install a specialized remotely controlled underwater vehicle in Kalan, equipped with a manipulator, to operate at a depth of up to 50 meters.
