Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething was unable to overcome the no-confidence vote but said he would continue to work in his role, Sky News reported on June 5.
29 deputies voted in favor of a motion of censure against the head of the autonomy and 27 voted against. The motion of no confidence was tabled by the Conservatives, the largest opposition group in the Senedd (Welsh Parliament).
Gething, the first black head of state of Wales, was appointed to the position in March 2024. In just over two months, Gething did not stand out at all, but he managed to get into the center of a scandal related to the receipt of funds for the electoral campaign.
According to the rules, Gething must not resign despite the defeat: the vote is not mandatory, but it puts additional pressure on the leader.
The leader of Britain’s opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, backed the party’s representative in Wales, telling reporters during the election campaign that Gething had done a “good job.”
