The report on the drought was published by the Institute of Soil and Plant Sciences – National Research Institute of Poland, the online publication TopAgrar reports on June 6.
The document contains climatic water balance values for all regions of Poland and the current risk of agricultural drought according to soil categories. According to the report, the drought is affecting winter and spring cereals.
The average value of the country’s climatic water balance, from which the risk of drought is assessed, was negative and amounted to -108 mm. The water deficit in the current period decreased by 16 mm compared to the previous reporting period.
According to the Institute of Soil and Plant Sciences, the largest water deficit in Poland was recorded in the Lublin Highlands, Polesie and the Silesian Lowlands, these values ranged from -170 to -189 mm. The smallest deficits, from -50 to -119 mm, were recorded in the northern and southern regions of the country.
The drought is affecting winter and spring cereals, with yield losses currently amounting to 20%. In addition, significant damage occurred to strawberries, bushes and fruit trees, and rapeseed.
