José Manuel Albares explained that Spain has made the decision after the events of recent days in which Israel has not stopped its offensive against Ráfah as the Court had demanded.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albaresannounced this Thursday that Spain is going to join the demand submitted by South Africa to the international Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel for alleged violation of the Convention against Genocide for its military offensive in Gaza after the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7.
“We have decided to take this step after the events of recent days in which we see that the precautionary measures of the International Court of Justice are completely ignored and are very far from being fulfilled,” Albares explained in an urgently called press conference. in reference to the fact that Israel has not stopped its offensive against Ráfah as the Court had demanded.
However, the minister did not want to comment on whether the military operation that Israel is carrying out in the Gaza Strip amounts to genocide, stressing once again that it is up to the ICJ to resolve this issue and that the Government of Spain will support, whatever it is, when it occurs.
“My personal opinion matters little, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is not here to give his personal opinions,” he stated, emphasizing that “the institutional opinion of the Government of Spain today is to intervene in this demand”, as he also did in the one formulated by Ukraine against Russia after the invasion. “This is not a contest or a race to see who has a more nuanced or less nuanced opinion,” he pointed out.
