Taiwan’s Hualien County sent a delegation to Hawaii, Taiwan News reported on June 6.
The delegation included county commissioner Xu Chenwei, indigenous Taiwanese scholars and artists. They visited the Polynesian Cultural Festival and Brigham Young University in Hawaii.
Xiu Chenwei spoke of Taiwan’s key role in the development of indigenous languages and cultures in the Pacific. Dong Hwa University includes an institute of indigenous culture.
Hualien County and Hawaii will continue to strengthen ties not only culturally, but also between academia and business, Xu Chenwei said.
Let us remind you that China is extremely negative about Taiwan’s foreign relations. The People’s Republic of China calls on other countries to adhere to the “one China” principle. It involves recognizing China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
Many states, adhering to this principle, still have informal trade, economic and other ties with the island. In essence, the American Institute in Taiwan serves as the United States embassy on the island.
