Georgia’s candidate status to join the European Union may be suspended due to the passed law on foreign agents, EU ambassador in Tbilisi Pavel Gerchinsky told reporters on June 6.
He said EU countries have already started discussing the measures they will take against Georgia. Union structures were asked “menu”such measures in response to non-compliance with Brussels’ demands.
“As you heard from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, all options are being considered, all options mean all options, including the possible suspension of the visa-free regime.”Gerchinsky said.
The ambassador recalled that to introduce any measure against Georgia, they must first be approved by all EU countries.
Recall that on June 3, the law on foreign agents came into force in Georgia. Within 60 days, nongovernmental organizations that receive grants from abroad must register as agents of foreign influence and each publish financial reports.
The US State Department announced on June 6 that sanctions had been imposed against several Georgian officials and their families for “undermining democracy.” They will be denied a US visa if they apply. The names of those subject to restrictions were not provided; 36 people were blacklisted.
