The speech of the President of the European Commission and candidate of the European People’s Party for a second term, held this Thursday in Porto, was interrupted by dozens of protesters supporting the Palestinians, who called for “Palestine to be liberated” from Israeli bombing. One protester was detained.
Ursula von der Leyen began speaking at an AD rally in central Porto and was praising the support of PSD President Luis Montenegro and AD list head Sebastian Bugalho when about 20 protesters interrupted her words with shouts. “Free Palestine”, given Israel’s bombing of Gaza, with hands painted red, reminiscent of the blood of confrontation.
Von der Leyen tried to continue her speech, but the rally’s attention was focused on the protesters, who eventually left the site with police escort.
