The President of the European Commission and candidate for this post joined the AD campaign this Thursday during the traditional visit to Santa Catarina, together with the leader of the PSD and the head of the list, Sebastián Bugalho, in a “security bubble”.
The riots began in Capela das Almas at around 18:40 and lasted less than half an hour when Ursula von der Leyen, Luis Montenegro and the head of the AD list united just down Rua de Santa Catarina, in Porto.
Neither the media nor almost any member of the public managed to break through the security bubble formed by about a dozen elements, including the AD delegation and the European People’s Party candidate for the European Commission.
Also in the front row of the street were SDS-PP leader Nuno Melo, former MEP Paulo Rangel and re-candidate Lidia Pereira.
Party youth slightly changed their usual slogans and shouted “Don’t stop Ursula” while holding EU flags and T-shirts in support of the candidate.
The “hots” asked, and the candidate for the European Commission also jumped along with Montenegro, Melo and Bugallo, who also listened briefly to the academic tune.
The historical PSD activist Amandio de Azevedo was one of the few who were allowed by the guards to greet the “celebrities” of the street, among whom were also deputies and leaders of the PSD and SDS-PP, such as Hugo Soares, Pedro Morais Soares, Pedro Duarte or Miguel Guimarães.
Three months ago, during the legislative elections, the route of the traditional AD “arruada” in Porto was slightly longer, lasting about 45 minutes, and Montenegro performed several times along the way.
As in March, the AD delegation concluded the rally in Dom João I Square, where the stage was already being set for the rally on the penultimate day of the campaign.
