China expressed its protest to India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of closer ties with Taiwan, The Economic Times reported on June 6.
The president of Taiwan, in a post on the social network X, congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his election victory. He further expressed his hope to strengthen “a rapidly developing partnership between Taiwan and India, expanding our cooperation in trade, technology and other sectors”.
In a reply message, Modi thanked the President of Taiwan for his congratulations and added: “I look forward to closer ties as we work toward mutually beneficial economic and technological partnerships.”.
Commenting on this correspondence, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said in a press conference that India has made serious political commitments and must counter the political calculations of the Taiwanese authorities. “China protested to India about this”she added.
He also noted that Taiwan does not have a president. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an integral part of the People’s Republic of China, he added, and the “one China” principle is a generally accepted norm in international relations.
Lai, 64, was sworn in as president of the breakaway island of Taiwan last month after winning the presidential election. Let us also remember that on June 4, India completed the counting of votes in the elections to the lower house of parliament (Lok Sabha), as a result of which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party won.
