According to a survey by the Portuguese Hotel Association (AHP), published this Friday, the majority of hoteliers have a booking rate for the summer of more than 50%, meaning that expectations for the high season are positive.
“Our hotel industry’s expectations for the high season are generally very positive,” AHP Executive President Cristina Siza Vieira said at a news conference to present data from a member survey on summer prospects.
As for June, 70% of respondents indicated booking levels between 50% and 89%, and 43% of responding hoteliers had booking levels above 70%.
Madeira stands out, with almost all respondents recording a booking rate above 70%, followed by the Azores, where 86% of respondents recorded a booking rate above 70%.
In July, at the national level, 67% of respondents recorded reserve levels between 20% and 69%, but in the Azores almost all respondents reported reserves above 70%, and in Madeira 98% had reserves above 50%.
In contrast, in Alentejo, only half of respondents have reserves greater than 20%, and this is the region with the lowest average reserve level.
In August, considered a strong month for tourism, 63% of respondents recorded bookings between 20% and 69%, with the Azores again in the spotlight as all respondents indicated they already had bookings above 70%.
In Madeira and the Algarve, the vast majority have booking levels above 50% for August.
Alentejo continues to have the lowest booking levels in August, with more than half of those surveyed recording bookings below 50%.
In September, more than half of respondents in the Azores (71%) reported booking rates above 70%, while in Madeira almost all reported rates above 50%.
In the Algarve, half of respondents have reserves of more than 50% for the last month of summer, while almost all respondents from the Center and 76% of respondents from Alentejo have reserves below 50%.
In terms of major markets, 73% of respondents listed the national market in the top three places, such as the United Kingdom (52% of the sample) and Spain (for 45% of respondents), followed by the United States of America and Germany. , up to 38% and 31% respectively.
MAI members were also asked about expectations for key hotel performance compared to summer 2023, with 89% of those surveyed responding that they forecast occupancy levels equal to or higher, with the center and Setubal peninsula being the most optimistic.
When it comes to average price, 76% of respondents expect it to be better than last year, and finally, when it comes to overall revenue and room rate, 68% of respondents expect it to be better or much better.
The survey took place from May 20 to 31 and received responses from 378 tourism establishments affiliated with AHP.
