Fudan University in China will begin teaching at least 100 courses related to artificial intelligence, Yicai reported on June 7.
Training will begin in the fall semester amid growing demand for AI specialists in China. As it became known, the AI-BEST university system is intended for all undergraduate and graduate students.
According to a McKinsey report, the demand for artificial intelligence specialists in China in 2030 will be six times higher than in 2022. Since the creation of the first artificial intelligence major in 2018, nearly 540 domestic universities have registered undergraduate majors in intelligence artificial.
The AI-BEST system at Fudan includes various types of courses. Core courses cover programming and mathematical foundations, model training, script development, and AI ethics. Additionally, core courses are linked to specific specialties, while thematic courses are interdisciplinary and related to other specialties, such as science, engineering and medicine. Finally, thematic courses focus on specific application scenarios related to socio-economic or industrial development.
According to Professor Chen Yan, the new generation of artificial intelligence has become the driving force for major technological breakthroughs, industrial optimization and modernization, and overall productivity growth. The system reflects the university’s vision for the AI roadmap, allowing it to take a leadership position in innovation in vertical areas and keep up with the latest advances in large language models to support the expansion of AI capabilities in various sectors, Chen added.
According to Qiu Xipeng, a professor in charge of Fudan’s ChatGPT-like MOSS model who will teach the core courses, the courses aim to develop students’ independent creativity and teach them how to solve practical problems.
In addition to Fudan University, other Chinese universities, including Beijing’s Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, have created AI schools to respond to the changing industrial landscape and labor market.
