The Istanbul Stock Exchange announced this Wednesday that it will close until Tuesday due to market volatility following the earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday and killed at least 11,700 people.
The stock exchange, which closed for the first time since 1999, justified Wednesday’s decision on “increasing volatility and extreme price fluctuations following the catastrophic earthquake.”
An earthquake of magnitude 7.8, followed by several aftershocks, devastated southeastern Turkey and northern Syria.
The market posted sharp losses before deciding to pause trading this morning.
“Given the low volume of transactions, which does not allow effective price fixing, all transactions conducted during the market suspension on February 8, 2023 will be canceled,” the exchange said in the afternoon, explaining that the closure will last until Tuesday. including justice.
The last time the Istanbul Stock Exchange closed was after the 1999 earthquake that killed more than 17,000 people.
